Taktsang (Tiger's Nest) Monastery Hike
Taktsang Monastery, also known as Tiger's Nest, is a must-visit destination when you're in Bhutan. Perched on a vertical cliff at an altitude of 3,120 meters above sea level, this iconic monastery is accessible via a challenging hike that gains nearly 800 meters in elevation.
There are three main ways to ascend:
- The shortest route is a direct climb from the base to the existing café, where you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the monastery.
- Alternatively, you can take the horse trail, though it can be a bit noisy and smelly due to the presence of horses and their waste.
- For a quieter and cleaner option, you can avoid the horse trail and follow a steeper, but more serene, path.
The total hike covers a distance of just over 3 kilometers. Depending on your fitness level and pace, it may take anywhere from 1.5 to 3 hours to ascend, with the descent taking between 30 minutes to 2 hours.
At the end of the hike, you’ll find Taktsangri-La, a perfect spot to relax. It’s advisable to pre-order snacks, lunch, or fruits to be ready for you when you reach the top or halfway down the trail.
Taktsangri-La also offers a rejuvenating hot stone bath, which is ideal for relaxing sore muscles. Himalayan herbs are soaked in hot water, heated by roasted stones, offering natural relief for muscle pain, cramps, joint aches, and general body fatigue. Make sure to book the hot stone bath at least 3 hours in advance.
