National Museum of Bhutan (Ta Dzong)

Housed in a 17th-century watchtower, the National Museum above Paro Dzong showcases Bhutan’s rich cultural heritage. The collection includes thangka paintings, religious artifacts, ancient weapons, and specimens of Bhutan’s unique biodiversity, including rare species like the takin, red panda, and black-necked crane.

Temple/Monastery

Jangtsa Dumtseg Lhakhang

Unique for its chorten (stupa) design rather than typical dzong architecture, this 15th-century temple was built by the Tibetan saint Thangtong Gyalpo. Its three floors represent the three spiritual realms: hell, earth, and heaven. The temple houses ancient murals and sculptures that offer insights into Tantric Buddhism and Bhutanese artistic traditions.

Fortress

Paro Rinpung Dzong (Fortress of the Heap of Jewels)

Constructed in 1644 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, this 17th-century fortress exemplifies Bhutanese traditional architecture with its massive stone walls, intricate woodwork, and iconic cantilever bridge. Today, it serves both administrative and monastic functions and is the venue for the vibrant Paro Tsechu held each spring.

Temple/Monastery

Kyichu Lhakhang

Believed to be built in the 7th century by Tibetan Emperor Songtsen Gampo, Kyichu Lhakhang is one of the oldest and most sacred temples in Bhutan. Legend says it is one of 108 temples erected across the Himalayas to subdue a demoness and secure the spread of Buddhism. This temple represents the left foot of the demoness pinned to earth.

Nyangmey Village Museum

1. This charming private museum, located in a traditional Bhutanese farmhouse, provides an intimate look at rural Bhutanese life. The collection includes antique household items, farming tools, kitchen utensils, and religious artifacts. Once the residence of a prominent local clan, it now preserves and showcases the material culture and customs of the Paro Valley’s villagers.

Here, Bhutanese archers dressed in traditional gho attire skillfully shoot arrows across an impressive 145-meter distance using bamboo bows and arrows.
