Guide Requirement in Bhutan

Following major tourism reforms in Bhutan post-COVID, travelers can now apply for an e-Visa independently, through a licensed tour operator, or via their hotel. One of the most significant changes is that hiring a guide is no longer mandatory, unlike in the pre-COVID era. Tourists are now free to stroll through towns, check into hotels, and explore various sites on their own.

However, for specific landmarks—such as the Tiger’s Nest Monastery, Kichu Lhakhang, and Paro Dzong in Paro, as well as the Memorial Chorten and Tashichho Dzong in Thimphu—it is mandatory to be accompanied by a licensed guide.

Having a guide enhances your visit, offering valuable insights into Bhutan’s rich history, iconography, and sacred wall paintings. Still, you can enjoy freedom and save costs by exploring non-restricted areas independently.

If you're entering Bhutan via land from India (Phuentsholing border), a guide is required at the pedestrian terminal. However, if you're arriving by air, you can simply hop into a taxi from the airport without needing a guide.
